Edgemead is a suburb based on the garden city principle with tree-lined streets, farmstyle facades and cobbled driveways.
This project was an upgrade/modernisation of an existing 1970s residence, which confronted the architect with the classic challenge of balancing the old with the new in such a way that none overshadows the other.
The classis Edgemeadian gables are maintained while subtle features like the steel/timber pergola are added to frame the entrance.
The back of the house is wrapped around by a steel framed canopy linking the new swimming pool to the braai area.
The interior spaces are opened up so that the kitchen flows through the dining space, and lounge onto the external entertainment area.
